Three weeks from now, I'll be in San Sebastian for the summer with my wife & kids. We will be a block from Playa Gros. What to do a log? For great looking boards from that part of the world, take a look at http://magic-quiver.blogspot.com/. Rui, who runs it, is a great guy. He's been helping me find a high quality log for use while I'm there.

In addition, I'm taking a 6' x 24" x 3" mini-Simmons with me. I'm glassing it now. It will have Probox fins & Probox-Larry is making me a set of Simmons keels to go with. The airline we're using, British Airways, will take boards under 6'3" for free. I'm going to find out if one can really grovel summer waves on a Simmons.

Last fall, I ordered a new board from Ryan Lovelace. It's an 8'4" x 23.5" hull. Very bladed, but, extra-wide for best use around Boston. On it's first east coast session, I was lucky enough to have a picture taken:

I picked it up from Ryan in CA and used it at County Line, Topanga and Cardiff. It works well, very smooth and very fast. In the picture, it's got a single fin. But, it has boxes for keels (haven't tried it that way yet). The wave here is a clean, short and fast, typical beach break situation. I was up and over the lip before it closed out. I think the rails are more bladed than my friend Clark's Vaquero, but, less bladed than his Liddle. No question, it does what a hull is supposed to do.

Saladita/Troncones/Gouache Drawing

Just got back from a great trip to Troncones and La Saladitas -- great longboarding waves. Last time I was there, I did a bunch of Gouache and ink drawings. When I'm in Mexico, it's very easy to be influenced the folk art and the ruins. The imagery is very dense and very appealing.

It's hard to measure the impact of King Ghidora on the Kaiju film continuum and on culture in general. A frequent victim of alien mind control, the "King of Terror" or "Monster Zero", as the press has dubbed him, may be Godzilla's favorite punching bag. A mid-size Simmons, my best guess at the original template. It's 8'8" x 24" x 3". XPS core from recycled sources, 2x6oz s-glass on both sides, lam with C3D epoxy, hot and fill coats with Resin-X, finish with 1K poly spray (a strange mix of toxic and recycled sources). The keels are G&S glass-on, classic fish. Next time, I'm going make myself a pair of Simmons keels. It's a short Simmons, not like the Casper or mini-Simmons boards. The template comes from images in TSJ and the book of Greg Noll surfboards. How does it ride? Super-early takeoff, very fast down the line. Get the whole rail in the face right away and you have it all; needs clean waves of any size; competes with any log; can be ridden on the nose.

It’s 6’2” x 23” x 3”. Stringer-less (recycled) EPS core. 2 x 6oz s-glass on both sides laminated with Resin Research epoxy. This is just before sanding & finish coat. It has a thick, crescent tail that I put there solely for visual reasons. The rails are 50/50 throughout. The bottom has belly throughout. The deck is flat. I kept it wide for earlier takeoff, an important asset around here. It’s only been in the water a few times. I just can’t get used to a board this short, despite the float and the weight. I’ve used it as a kneeboard. It worked well for stuffing the whole inside rail into some small faces, then pulling up on the outside rail. I’d like to get comfortable with this board and make more like it, probably thinner noses & tails, but keep the width

Here is by brother-in-law on a great wave at M*****. It was an insanely good day and we each got just a few waves. Usually, I never bother driving down there when you have W********* and S****** right there in I********. He couldn't look more like Greg Noll if he had stripes tattooed on his a**. He was riding the same board (same a** too) during Hurricane Bill and looking just as good.

Here’s, one of me on a nice little wave in S*******. Some of you know it’s paradise for logging. I’m on my favorite board, an A*** K**** that’s *’*”, single f**. This was small day of the trip, though it never really got bigger than a consistent chest-high. A surfer from AL, staying on the beach for the winter, took the pictures then burned me a CD in his hut. We’re back there this winter.

The Interlift

Back in '79 (until maybe '83? and before the internet), NY and SF had these hydraulic Interlift access points around town. You'd go up there with a floppy, transfer your LMail, then go back to your Wang Office workstation or whatever you had at the office. I had a summer job checking the floppies before they were walked over to the Interlift ... making sure everything was properly formatted, etc ... The big thing was sending an LMail and having it show up on someone's Telex 45 minutes later. I saw this rusting hulk at a tech flea market last weekend.

Hot on the heels of my 11'6" wave eater, is this 8'10" mid-length Simmons longboard thing. A little more fussing, art, then glass (with glass-on keels). Like my last two boards, the lam will be epoxy (C3D), the hot & gloss will be Resin-X (also C3D). The foam is XPS, built from a recylced source (http://www.conigliaro.com/). The stringer is plywood, selected from a dumpster in Cambridge.

For those who haven't tried Resin-X (and that's almost all of you), it's worth experience. For the artist, garage or low volume builder, it is clean and easy to work with. Most of the learning curve is in deciding how much to thin out a particular layer.

For those who have been kind enough to ask, this one is also not for sale.

It started out as a Frye-style cross-country board. It ended up a lot like the SurfTech Munoz I used to own (but without that Surftech rattle). I've surfed it once. It took off early, didn't sink and turned with surprising ease.

The composition is heavily influenced by Japanese stories and art about various kinds of Majin, especially ones imprisoned in mountain faces. On the first afternoon out, my friend John took a few pictures. More pictures coming soon ...

Surf Report: Dissapointing short period windswell, onshore everywhere the swell is showing. Hopefully some NW for tomorrow AM. I need to get this one back in the water.

Minimalist Fighting Style

Just five feet tall, this powerhouse of mid 20th century Armenians lived in France and England during and after the Second World War. Eventually, he moved to Watertown, MA. There, he became a pastry cook, matchmaker and role model for young Armenians caught in the ethnic crush of 1970's Watertown. I scanned this old trading card from a British Giant Parma Violets giveaway.

Plenty of surf this spring. I can't remember a day in the last six weeks where I wanted to surf and there wasn't something available. The wind has been unpredictable, so you need to rely on sheltered, harder to find spots. I've had every kind of board out in the last month, from big quad, to log to SUP (but not big enough for BB). What a nice reward, after a long winter of very decent surf. Check out all the NE surfing sites for many, many images.

Latest Recycled Stubb ...

Lots of effort required to get usable foam out of this one. It once was 2/3 of a classic log (try to guess what kind). Now it's a 5.5', wide, square, very flat, single. The lam is RR epoxy, the hot & gloss coats are Resin-X. The art is india ink & acryclic, in multiple layers. This is my first Resin-X board, so far really good (Matt, of Resin-X, has been very generous with his advice). Soon to be polished ...

Mex Wax, the best for your stick ...

When you're logging Sayulita, you need your Mexican Surf Board WAX. It has those nice little bumps. At 30 pesos a bar (special tourist price), it does everything but ride the nose on your behalf. Magically, when you get back home to the freezing north, it becomes the base coat until mid-July.

Surf Report: The north shore was windy, mostly clean and waist/chest early this AM. The tide was dropping, but, gusty NNW making the takeoff hard on a shorter board. There may have been some bigger sets. It was good from 6:30 until 8:45 or so, then it got too bumpy. If you haven't been out today, pick your spots with care ...

Mexico Surf Trip

I cannot recommend a winter surf trip to one of the best logging waves in North America. If you go there, don't bring your 9'6". Be ready for heavy crowds and bad attitudes. There are no paved roads. You can't drink the water. The rental cars are a rip-off. The tamales and pozole will surely cause Moctezuma's Revenge. Maybe on the one small day, someone will take some pictures of you and burn a CD for you on the beach. Maybe it will be flat the whole time. Stay away from the Pacific coast of Mexico. Unless it's Ixtapa. Then you should go there and surf that hot wave near the fish pier.

Surfboards Chinatown

Some of you have read about Joe Chen's "Surfboards Chinatown" project from a few years ago. On a recent trip to NYC, I visited his new shop. It's a classic Chinatown building, formerly a furniture warehouse. An empty area behind the showroom contains a single, unshaped, blank. Joe hopes to produce a lot boards in what will be the second phase of his project. The shop is definitely core and it turns out Joe and I went to college together (also in NYC). He has a solid selection of interesting boards, including twin pins, stubs and biscuits. There were few thrusters, no funboards and no popouts. He gives lessons (even in winter) and has an unusual selection of gray market bodyboards. After you check it out, go to the nearest noodle shop for lunch.

New Recycled Stubby for 2008 ...

A new stubby for 2008. It's 5'5" x 20" x 2 3/4". Many years ago, it was a Weber log. Then, it was cut down. Then, it came to me. There was enough reasonable foam to get this stubby out of it. It will have very pinched rails and be glass with Resin-X. This is the last old poly board I'll be recycling for awhile. It's going to be a single, glass-on. My next batch of foam will be built by hand, with EPS from a recycle/reuse source near Boston.

Surf Report: Waves were decent yesterday, in the 3-5' range. It got cleaner as the sun came up. Then it dropped off to nothing. After 12 days of nothing, we've had several fun days, with more to come later in the week.

Holiday 2007 Surf Report

December was a solid month for waves -- especially in the last week of 2007. The secret points of the North Shore had plenty to offer. I hope you all got some. The Friday before New Year was the best, with a super-clean dawn patrol (perfect tide, perfect wind, mild temps).

After finding that old board the other day, I had to look around for more examples of this old surf clothing brand. Here is an early 90s scan from a magazine ad (the final issue of Bodyboarding no less). Perhaps this was a last attempt to save the brand in the post-dayglo, MCD, surf fashion backlash. By this time, I was probably wearing ripped jeans and a pendelton shirt to the beach.

Le Coque du Surf ...

Le Coque Du Surf. Go back to 1986. For a few summers, it was a bigger brand on the east coast than OP. Polos, baggies, moccasins, sunglass straps and man bags. All could be had with this embroidered Coque. You wouldn't think of coming down the boardwalk at Coast Guard Beach without a Coque polo and Vuarnets.

I recently ran across this old ride in the rafters. It has to be one of the few east coast t-band logs made in the 80s.

This is my postcard for 2007. This is "Surfboard-CR1." 6'2" x 22" x 3". Recycled foam core, epoxy, acrylic and India Ink. Single fin "Stubby" shape, stringerless. Not yet surfed.

Surfboard at 2007 South End Open Studios

At this year's open studios, I will be showing a set of three surfboards and related drawings and paintings. These boards are my investigation into adapting my visual goals onto functional surfboards. This includes both the painted images and the composition of the core, using recycled materials alongside the latest technology. This is the first output of my drawing and sculpture in the context of my life as a surfer in New England.

Set the fin box, sand, polish. Soon to eat up all the waves at some crappy break just N of Boston (no, that's not the fin you would use -- it just looks hot).

Bookends of assemblage from found materials. The sources are the Outer Beach and Plum Island, MA. Also, the surf report: small waves on Saturday, 2/3/07. As with every swell this winter, it was gone by noon. Flat all this week.

January Surf Report

Despite spring weather, surf has been very flat (maybe four days above 1'). It's a good time to get some board building done. 6'2" x 22" x 3", single fin, 50/50 rails.

A few years ago, I had a fantastic show at the Danforth Museum in Framingham. It's a great place, very active in the community. Take your kids to their weekend afternoon studio classes.

These are very important pliers, in use since I was a child.

When I was a kid, we used to ride these boards down at the Nahant Breakwater, over by Castle Island. Lots of splinters.

An image for New Years' Eve. This drawing is based on two guys I used to work with. They always seemed to be coming back from a party or a vacation -- really great guys.

Made at Mass Art in 1999. Someone bought it then returned it because it bothered his S.O. It has since remained off the market.
